How can I relieve my SPD discomfort?
The key is not to suffer in silence, this is a really treatable condition and it is safe to treat it during your pregnancy.
Symptoms you may experience with SPD;
Do you feel discomfort when walking up and downstairs?
Does bending to put socks or underwear on result in pain in your pelvis?
Is it uncomfortable to turn over in bed?
If you are experiencing any of these it may be that there is a problem with the way your pelvis is working.
So what should I do about it?
Do not suffer in silence!
This is treatable and it is advisable to have such treatment while you are still
pregnant in order to minimise your discomfort during labour and childbirth.
Rest is not the answer!
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP), formally known as SPD, is not caused by pregnancy
hormones as was previously believed. PGP affects the whole pelvis which is a 3d
structure and if one of the joints is not moving normally this will be affect other
joints and soft tissue, including your coccyx.
Who can help me?
A women's health trained physiotherapist with training in manually treating the
pelvic joints (or indeed a sport physiotherapist and some osteopaths and
chiropractors).
The Pelvic Partnership has a very useful directory of manual therapists and they
will try to help you find someone in your area.
