The Association for the Improvement of Maternity Services was created in 1960 by Sally Wilmington. This volunteer organisation actively campaigns to make sure that maternity services in the UK are always improving. Their online website is a wealth of information, always backed by hard facts and scientific evidence. If you are having difficulties with your health professionals not supporting your choice of birth, you will find help and advice on how to proceed and what your rights are. AIMS has been campaigning for a long time to ensure that mothers-to-be are given the option to birth at home or in water .

The Birth Choice UK website was created by Miranda Dodwell, Ruth Armes and Rod Gibson to support women in their choice of where and how to give birth to their child.
A survey published in 2000 stated that "more than half the women surveyed suggested that they would have liked additional information of some type during their initial antenatal appointment. The most common thing women wanted to know about was what to expect from pregnancy care services and what options were available". This website has been created to give pregnant women and their partners that additional information. For women throughout the United Kingdom there are several options for birth. This may mean choosing a particular place to give birth, such as at home, in a small maternity unit or in one of a number of hospitals, or it could involve choice of the type of maternity care, eg shared between a GP and midwife, or by a team of community midwives attached to a hospital, or by an independent midwife.
The website provides invaluable statistical information on maternity units as well as their contact details and the services that each offer. This will help you choose the best unit near you based on your expectations and the birth that you want.
