| Doula UK |
"Doula" (pronounced "doola") is a Greek word meaning "woman servant or caregiver". It now refers to an experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth. A doula believes in "mothering the mother" - enabling a woman to have the most satisfying and empowered time that she can during pregnancy, birth and the early days as a new mum. This type of support also helps the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience.
Doula UK is the non-profit organisation for doulas.

The Society of Homeopaths website is a helpful resource offering a wealth of information including the use of homeopathy during pregnancy and labour. The tenet behind homeopathy is that a medicine that produces certain symptoms in a healthy person will cure those symptoms in a sick person. The site also features a useful locator to find your nearest qualified homeopath.

The Mongan method of hypnobirthing is taught at a series of classes rather like antenatal classes but with an emphasis on natural labour and childbirth achieved through being relaxed and staying calm and in control at each stage. It teaches you how to be informed to the point of being able to communicate calmly and effectively with medical personnel in order to achieve your needs and wants. The classes also supply you with a great book for continued study before and after birth together with a CD to help promote relaxation.
Research articles are available and there is a great forum to talk to others who have either tried or are thinking about trying the technique.
Another useful site is www.hypnosis.me.uk where you can find a directory of classes in your area (this site is for general hypnotherapy but will guide you towards the specific pregnancy related hypnosis).

Reflexology involves pressure being applied to various points on your feet or hands. Anecdotally, reflexology is very effective at relieving pain. It is also said to be particularly helpful if your baby is overdue according to your midwife and you are feeling the need to bring about labour before induction is suggested. Treating women in pregnancy is said to be “extremely safe” significantly reducing pregnancy niggles, such as nausea, indigestion and constipation. Reflexology can be practised by your partner during labour once you have been taught by your practitioner, but you can also pay to have a reflexologist present should you bond particularly well.
Reflexology can also help to alleviate tiredness and promote healing after your baby is born. For more information...

There are various ways to employ these benefits; through massage, vaporisers, inhalations and compresses.
